What is Starvation Mode?

If you are thinking about performing weight loss on your body and looking for resources on the internet, chances are that you have come across a term called Starvation Mode.

The common explanation about Starvation Mode is that when you are consuming less amount of food calories than as determined by the TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) value for your body type to reduce weight, your body will enter Starvation Mode. When in Starvation Mode, your body's metabolism rate (digestion rate) will slow down and as a result no more stored calories (in other words, Fat calories) would get burnt, thereby stopping the weight loss process completely.

While several discussions are taking place across the internet and the fitness communities about Starvation Mode, the general consensus in the scientific community is that there is no such thing as Starvation Mode.

In other words, the scientific community thinks that the Starvation Mode in your body is not for real and just a myth that has no basis for justification. As a result, scientific community continues to recommend reducing the amount of calories consumed than as determined by the TDEE calorie value of your body to attain the desired body weight.

History behind Starvation Mode Myth:

Starvation Mode became a popular myth in the weight loss community during the Minnesota Starvation Experiment where in the participants where provided with 50% of the food calories than their recommended TDEE daily calorie intake. As a result, the participants started and continued to loose weight until they hit the plateau where in the body could not find anywhere to loose any more body weight. This result was dubbed as reaching Starvation Mode which was later mistaken to reaching a state of lower metabolism while starving.

So, since this is just a myth and has no bearing to reality, if you are looking for a weight loss strategy, go ahead with the calorific deficit process without worrying much about reaching any Starvation Mode.
