A stock exchange is simply a place or a facility set up by a commerce trading board of that country mainly used to trade stocks or share transactions between buyers and sellers.
Whenever you want to buy a stock in a stock market, there is always a seller on the other end of the stock market. This stock seller may be an individual like you or a large institution such as a bank or hedge funds that are dealing with stock selling and other transactions.
Similarly, whenever you are selling a stock, the buyer on the other end of the stock market can also be an individual just like you, or the aforesaid large bank or an hedge fund that is actually buying your stock.
Thus, stock market or stock exchange is a place that facilitates this transaction to happen in a fair way and to ensure no fraud takes place during each of these transactions.
