So what does it take to be knowledgeable enough in a stock market? While there is no definitive answer to this question, one of the basic element of this knowledge is to know how to read a stock quote.
What is a stock quote?
A stock quote is a small table that you get to see in any Financial Newspaper or a Finance related news websites which list the current stock prices in that particular day's stock market trading. There are several fields that exists in this stock quote table where each column corresponds to a particular feature.
52W High: This column describes the highest value a particular stock went to in the last 1 year (52 weeks)
52W Low: This column describes the lowest value a particular stock went to in the last 1 year (52 weeks)
Stock: This column has the name of the company who's stock you are observing in that row.
Ticker: This column corresponds to the stock ticker value. Each of the stocks traded in the stock market corresponds to a stock ticker value. All online stock trading happens on this ticker value, so you must be aware of the ticker values for all your interested stocks.
Div: This column corresponds to the annual dividend given by that company in that corresponding year.
Yield(%): This column corresponds to the dividend yields achieved by that company. A dividend yield is a ratio between the (total dividend offered) / (total stocks on the offer) by that company.
P/E: Price to Earnings Ratio corresponds to the current stock price to the total earnings made by that stock in the last four quarters (an year).
Trading Volume(00): Total number of stocks that are currently being offered by the company in hundreds.
Day High: Highest value reached by that stock in that corresponding day
Day Low: Lowest value reached by that stock in that corresponding day
Day Close: The final traded price of its stock at the end of that trading day.
Net Change: This corresponds to the total change in the value of the stock compared to the previous day.
