When you have enabled mobile data network, you may have sometimes noticed a peculi character "G" or "E" right next to the signal strength bars on your smartphone screen. This character will be displayed on all sorts of smartphones including Android smartphone and iPhones.

Ever wondered what "G" or the "E" character symbols at the signal strength bar indicator of your smartphone stood for?

So here is your answer. A "G" symbol on your network stands for GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and an "E" symbol stands for "EDGE" (Enhanced Data for Global Evolution).

Whenever your smartphone be it Android smartphone or an Apple iPhone enters into one of these two states, it signifies that the smartphone or the tablet device has a low data signal strength compared to 4G network or a 2G network.

Both GPRS ("G") and EDGE ("E") networks are really slow form of 2G networks. When your smartphone or tablet mobile device is running on GPRS or EDGE networks, the web experience will be really slow. Only basic web page data would get loaded and most of the App experience will be heavily impacted.

Why do we get "G" symbol or the "E" symbol on your smartphone Antenna bars?

The reason we see "G" or the "E" symbol next to your Antenna signal strength bars is due to you being in a low signal strength areas. There is nothing much as a smartphone or tablet user you could do in these situations except to move yourself to a different area where the signal strength is higher.

My smartphone suddenly displays "G" or "E" symbol when I received an incoming call

Sometimes, when you receive an incoming voice call while your data on your smartphone is active, the smartphone automatically switch to EDGE or GPRS network. This is due to reduced data network signal strength to your device from the telecom operator while your voice call session is active. If you wait for sometime after the end of your voice call, the device will switch back to 3G or 4G signal strength again.
