Google made a public statement today announcing a severe vulnerability existing in the current Android security system that lends a simple Android app to gain root privilege access to the affected device and thereby compromising the device permanently.
Google noted that the root bug vulnerability lies in all devices running Linux Kernel version 3.4, 3.10 and 3.14. Google also announced that they have already identified at least one Android app existing in the Google Playstore already exploiting this vulnerability, though may not have been intended with mallicious purpose.
Google says that users willing to root their Android smartphones to gain additional functionalities need to be aware of the resulting consequences of exposing such vulnerabilities. A malicious Android app that could be downloaded from outside Android Google Playstore from third party app stores can exploit this root privilege and render the entire Android smartphone compromised.
There are various malicious Android apps coming in from 3rd party websites that sometimes even auto downloads and installs without users explicit knowledge. If your Android smartphone is also already rooted by the user, these kind of apps can exploit to gain root privilege and compromise the Android device permanently. These malicious apps sometime encrypt the entire smartphone data and demand money for decrypting the data back (aka malware apps).
Google says that it is already patching this vulnerability and pushing across the patches to all its Nexus line of Android smartphones. However for Android smartphones from other vendors such as HTC, Motorola, Samsung and Sony, the patch needs to come through the OEMs and may also through the Telecom service providers. Hence, this patch may not arrive to these Android smartphones on time leaving these devices remain vulnerable for a long time.
Any Android smartphone running Linux Kernel 3.18 and higher is said to be devoid of this exploit and hence these users need not have to worry. However, for every other Android smartphone user out there, Google is already giving sufficient warnings of a possible exploitation.
