There is no standard or unified way to take screenshots on your Android device as it is largely dependent on the version of Android as well as the hardware.
  • On Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwitch) and above
Pressing the Volume Down and Power buttons simultaneously for a second will prompt your phone to take a screenshot and it is saved in Gallery.

  • On pre-Android 4.0 devices
The screenshot taking feature varies a lot with devices from popular manufacturers like Samsung supporting the key combination Home and Power buttons (works in almost all Samsung Galaxy series phones with pre-Android 4.0 OS) to be pressed simultaneously to take a screenshot. But the key combination might not work for other manufacturers. In that case, you need to fall back on Apps that serve the purpose.

  • Screenshot Apps without Root access
Until not long ago, taking screenshots on Android platform wasn't possible without rooting the phone and there are plenty of apps in the Google Play Store that can take screenshots on rooted devices. But since many of us are averse to Rooting, a prudent consideration would be Apps that don't require root access. Screenshot Ultimate is one such free app with nice features. It supports 10 different ways to take a screenshot including overlay icon, audio, shake, camera hardware button and so on.A host of editing and sharing options are also integrated into the app.No Root Screenshot It is another awesome app in this segment but is a paid one.
